TEN – FLY BY

Oakland, PA

Zeus returned again to the EPEV after taking Yates the second power pack. It was his fourth trip back and forth across the decimated college grounds.

He and Rigs had carried everything they could take and stored it in the EPEV. The main computer from the lab was obviously still in use and would be until Yates finished copying the program. It was boring. They weren’t talking when he left to get the power pack, lanterns and some dinner for them. They still were quiet when he returned.

So, he went back. Plus, he had that backpack of the dead woman to explore. Kasper was excited to see what was in it.

Morrows had made dinner. Eliminator Teams were issued Prepared Ready Meals but in family size packs. So cooking wasn’t that difficult. He made a good pot of coffee which Zeus enjoyed with the apple cake.

“When are they coming back?” Morrows asked Zeus, refreshing his coffee.

“He said soon. He’ll radio and I’ll head back to help.” Zeus glanced up from the table to Ginger. “Ma’am this cake is amazing.”

Ginger only nodded her thanks. She wasn’t speaking much, Zeus figured it was probably because she was self-conscious about how she spoke. Kasper said he felt the same way until his speech came back.

It took practice, which Ginger wasn’t doing.

“Dude.” Kasper rushed in from the back. “Got the handheld hooked up to the main frame Thermos. Let’s do this.”

“What are we doing?” asked Morrows.

“We’re checking out the dead girls backpack,” Zeus replied.

“Oh, yes, I remember you saying something about a pack,” Morrow said. “Can I ask why?”

“She was holding on to it for dear life,” Zeus explained. “I mean, she obviously was injured, running for her life and still … she held that backpack and would not let go. Something important was in there.”

Morrows asked. “Where is it?”

“Outside. It didn’t smell great. I mean not a horrendous smell, but I guess from her fingers kind of sticking to it, I left it out there.” Zeus stood and walked to the door. “Plus, Ginger’s cake smelled really good and I didn’t want to mess that up.”

As soon as he opened the door, Kasper, excited, made room on the table.

Zeus had the bag right outside the door and a mere reach for it.

“Wow.” Morrows chuckled. “Kasper you’re excited.”

“Dude, General, not much happens. Waiting for the Ego team to get back is boring. I mean, unless we want to make some noise and call the dead, it’s gonna be a long night.”

Morrows let out a soft cringing ‘whoa’, when Zeus places the yellow and red crazy designed backpack on the table.

“I smell what you mean.”

“That’s old flesh,” Kasper stated. “Stopped rotting but is stale. See.” He leaned toward the strap. “I see flesh.” He sniffed. “Yep, that’s it.”

Zeus reached for the outer pocket. “Let’s do this first.” He unzipped it and reached in. “Cigarettes, cell phone,” he placed it on the table.

“I’ll take that.” Kasper grabbed it. “That will give us lots of information about her if I can get it powered up.
